Design Approach
The N1000 1MW turbine implements a lighter, simpler design than traditional wind turbines, providing a lower overall cost of energy and greater reliability. In traditional turbine design, the amount of construction material is proportional to the anticipated wind loads. The N1000’s revolutionary “flexible design” evens out the impact of turbulence and wind shear without adding material and weight. This patented design approach is based on precise calculations of the eigenfrequency oscillations of the entire system and configures the turbine so that high component loads never occur.
The result is a turbine that is both lighter and more reliable. Nordic’s turbines have performed with exceptional reliability and no major component failures for more than 13 years. They have collectively operated for more than 140,000 hours in both normal and extreme wind conditions.
Typical three-blade wind turbines have been designed to respond rigidly to operational loads. The result is lighter components and a simpler overall machine.
Lower Cost to Install
The light weight, two-blade configuration greatly simplifies site construction and installation, including a more material efficient foundation, fewer components to ship, reduced crane picks, and smaller crane requirements.
The two blades are conveniently attached on the ground before lifting the nacelle, greatly simplifying construction as compared to three-blade turbines. With the rotor attached, the nacelle can be lifted at higher wind speeds, reducing weather delays. As a result, ground assembly is much safer, faster, and easier.
All of these translate into reduced costs and improved return on investment.
Lower Cost of Ownership
The N1000’s 13 year proven operational track record with exceptional reliability substantiates the flexible design philosophy. The flexible design, enabled by the unique two-blade configuration and teeter hub, translates into a lower cost of ownership based on reduced wear on the drivetrain, reliable and proven electrical system, longer component life and less unplanned maintenance.
